—Some people believe that the climax of the story is found in chapter 5, which we read last class. What event do you think could be considered the climax, and why?

—How do you predict the story will end?

—Review: Let’s make sure that we remember what PLOT elements occurred last class—

◦List the reasons the pearl dealers give Kino for offering him such a low price for his pearl.

◦What do the following symbols represent:

–Dishonest pearl buyers

–The coin

Consider: Are men and women throughout the world treated equally? Give some examples from real life and literature to support your answer.

—Review--What do the following have in common: becoming an adult, music, anger, money, superstitions. What box do they fit in on our packet? (***What do we need to add to the word to make them fit the “box”?)

—How would you react if someone tried to cheat you? Would protesting and fighting be the brave and wise thing to do, although it meant putting you and your family’s lives in danger? Would it change your mind if your protesting would disturb the community around you?

* How many emotions can you attach to the sentence: “I’m so happy to see you”?

* Identify the “tone” of the following passages:

—“The news stirred up something infinitely black and evil in the town; the black distillate was like the scorpion, or like hunger in the smell of food, or like loneliness when love is withheld.”

—“And this Kino knew also—that the gods do not love men’s plans, and the gods do not love success unless it comes by accident.”

—“He was trapped as his people were always trapped, and would be until, as he had said, they could be sure that the things in the books were really in the books. He could not take that chance….”

—Review: “The Pearl” is an example of a symbol. Write at least 3 different meanings of The Pearl. Also, come up with meanings for the following symbols: the sun, the ocean, and the color black.

—What place does superstition have in our society today? Where do superstitions come from? Are you superstitious about anything?

Think about this: Do you think people are encouraged to express their anger, or to swallow and forget it? What might be some positive aspects of voicing anger? Why and when might it be better to hide angry feelings?
